and a volunteer fire department & ambulance corps. Located approx. only 10 miles north of the George Washington Bridge to NYC, Closter is predominately & overwhelmingly a residential community with a total of 2,865 housing units. Although public transportation supports the many residents who commute to & from New York City, Rockland County & other parts of the Bergen County area, residents continue to enjoy this "side" of the river with a combination of nature centers, brooks, wild life refuge and a recreational pond for fishing and ice skating. The proximity to Route 9W and the Palisades Interstate Parkway is priceless to New York City commuters who find the borough to be a most friendly scenic locale to raise a family in. Along with its' highly respected public school system, town sponsored recreational as well as performing arts programs, the ature center & many public parks, one cannot imagine a much better place to call home.
available to the community members include home maintenance & auto repair, gas stations, travel agencies, restaurants, boutiques and salons, supermarkets and a host of other retail shops located in the business sections. Closter is also rich in ethnic and cultural diversity. The community prides itself on the outstanding support of the dedicated Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Corps & with the highly trained Police Department.
heritage throughout the borough. Most of the Colonial architecture in the Hudson River Valley was Dutch in origin & over 20 of these original homes still remain and are still used by Closter residents. No other town in Bergen County boasts so great a concentration of houses built in or prior to 1740, many street names as well reflect the original Dutch heritage and history. Closter today is a unique blend of old world charm along with new upscale housing developments and an abundance of all modern day amenities one can expect in an affluent suburban town.
Discussions are also underway to possibly revive the historic rail line running through the center of town for commuter purposes with possible stations at nearby points to the south of town in Cresskill and Tenafly. Although historically the coming of the original train line in the 1860’s played a major roll in the further development of the area, now days, with the exception of very limited freight activity, this line is hardly in use. The possibility of future direct light rail service is till in the discussion and planning stages and a while away, however it remains an option which if and when brought to fruition will create added value to this already hot in-demand real estate region.
Travel times are approximate and of course depend on traffic so it is always wise to plan airport trips at off- peak times to avoid rush-hour traffic when possible. Closter's History Closter Town Information |
